In college, many of my friends studied the Greek language. Being an elementary education major, Greek courses were not part of my schedule. And so when my friends were subjugating verbs and parsing sentence structure, I just rolled my eyes and declared, "It's all Greek to me."
Nowadays, Greek is much more common, at least in the yogurt form. With its recent rise in popularity, I was curious to know how Greek yogurt is different from plain, ol' regular yogurt. Why does Greek yogurt have twice as much protein? Why is it thicker, creamier? Why is it more expensive, and is it worth the extra money?
I am getting ready to start another series of childbirth classes, and during my first meeting with my new students, we will discuss the importance of nutrition during pregnancy. One factor, in particular, that expecting mothers need to focus on is getting plenty of protein in their diet, around 75 to 100 grams every day! Hence, Greek yogurt makes a wonderful snack for these mamas-to-be. BUT, if I am going to recommend something, I like to know why it's so beneficial. I found a great explanation of the differences between Greek and regular yogurt. My own questions were answered and now I feel better prepared to teach my upcoming class!
I will definitely direct them to the article, so they can read it for themselves and not just take my word for it.
