Last night at my childbirth class one of the mamas brought along some sonogram pictures to share with the rest of us. In one of the pictures, you could clearly see the profile of her little baby boy. Isn't it amazing how someone so small can be so perfectly formed and all the intricate details fitted together just right?!
I remember seeing my daughter for the first time. She was only 12 weeks along, and we hadn't planned on doing a sonogram that early, but the midwife couldn't find the baby's heartbeat with the doppler. We did a sonogram to make sure everything was okay, and sure enough, there was my tiny child doing backflips and kicking up a storm inside of me. I couldn't feel her furious movements yet, but it was amazing to see our little acrobat in action. Soon enough I experienced what is known as "flutterings," and for the first time I actually felt my baby move. It's so difficult to express the wonder of such a miracle...and once you do, you are never the same.
It's like that itsy bitsy person has totally and completely captured your heart. You are so deeply in love with someone you have never officially met. And when you hear your baby's heartbeat, you somehow fall in love even more.
So you wait with eager anticipation to see and hold and kiss this baby you have heard and felt moving inside of you for so long. You thought you were in love before, but the moment you lay eyes on your precious child, the love escalates to a whole new level. You are overwhelmed and you try to take it all in -- the tiny fingers and toes, the cute little mouth and nose, those eyes that look up at you -- but you just melt.

This is why I believe that you learn more about true love on the day of your child's birth than you did even on your wedding day.
