My students Steve and Grete were due on December 23 and expecting a "Christmas Baby." I joked that many of my students go "late," with their babies coming around 41 weeks, which is actually the length of an average pregnancy. And so I predicted their baby would come on December 31, just in time for a nice tax credit come April!
Well, Steve and Grete's baby wanted to let them know HE was in charge from the get-go. He wasn't go to be labeled a "Christmas Baby," and he didn't like my idea of coming on December 31 and being a "Tax Baby" either. This stubborn little guy wanted to be a 2013 baby and come when HE was ready, on January 6!
Steve and Grete had planned to have their baby at New Birth Company, a birth center in Overland Park, Kansas. However, because Grete's body was showing absolutely no signs of labor starting on its own even at 42 weeks, the midwife recommended transferring to Shawnee Mission Hospital. Not exactly what Steve and Grete had in mind, but when they came to class yesterday to share their birth story with my new set of students, they explained it was still a good experience.
And most importantly, their son Dublin is a healthy baby boy! I am sure Steve and Grete have enjoyed the last 20 days or so of parenthood, and that the wait to start this exciting journey was well worth it once they got to hold their son in their arms!
