Nutrition during pregnancy is of utmost importance! Hence, I focus on this topic in my very first class, and then reference it in every class following.
The Bradley Method® recommends that pregnant women follow the "Brewer Diet." When I am teaching, I stress having a well-balanced diet with lots of green, leafy vegetables, good sources of protein (75-100 grams EVERY day), colorful fruits, salting your food to taste, and LOTS of water. As I was preparing for my new series of classes, I came across this article about the Brewer Diet and found it quite informative. The video clip that is linked at the end of the article offers an extremely in-depth explanation of why nutrition is key to reducing the risk of complications throughout pregnancy, as well as the need for interventions once its time for the baby to be born.
I always like to know WHY something is good for me. I figure my students want the same. I hope they trust me and believe what I am telling them in class, but I don't expect them to just take my word for it either. Research takes time though, so I thought I would make the process a little bit easier for them.
